Big Bear Lake--July 18

The State Series Final took place today with a number of high overall placings up for grabs

In the 35-39 Cat. 2 class, George Umale just missed the podium with a solid 6th place finish. Overall for the year he finished 12th.

In the 40-44 Cat.2 class, John Umale finished the series with a strong 3rd place. Overall for the series, John was 2nd. Excellent job!

Our one competitor in the 45-49 class, Vince Sabotin did not make the race but he still finished a good 8th overall for the Series.

In the 50-54 Cat.2 class, Francisco Vidal had already locked up the Series Championship but figured he might as well put an exclamation point on the end by grabbing 1st place in the final. Great job Francisco!

Gary Bojorquez moved up to the 55-59 class this year and made a strong showing. He was 6th in the final race and was 4th overall for the Series. Nice ride Bojo!

In the 60-64 Cat.2 class, Bruce Ramsey was able to outlast all his competitors and finish the final race atop the podium. This was enouigh to allow him to finish the Series as the State Champion. Great job.

Our only Cat.1 rider, Eric Airheart did not make the race but still finished in the top ten with a 10th overall in the 50-54 class.

All in all a great Series for the Santa Clarita Velo with two Series Champions plus a 2nd and 4th overall. Not bad at all!

Big Bear Lake

The second to last race of the Calif. State series took place on June 20 at Big Bear.

Cat.1 was represented by Eric Airheart in the 50-54 class. He finished just off the podium in 6th place with a time of 2:08:43 A good ride by Eric.

Cat. 2 was well represented by a number of Santa Clarita Velo riders.

George Umale was 6th in the 35-39 class in a time of 1:22:54, while brother John had a hard day finishing 8th in the 40-44 class in 1:29:18. Unfortunately this knocked John out of his 1st place overall spot.

Francisco Vidal was able to outlast the compitition in the 50-54 class taking home the 1st place medal with a time of 1:17:19 (wow!). This finish makes it impossible for anyone to beat him in the overall so CONGRATS to the new State Champion!!

Gary Bojorquez finished 7th in the 55-59 class in a time of 1:44:57

The final cat. 2 rider was Bruce Ramsey who started out slow but was able to reel in everyone in his class. That 1st place finish means that all he has to do at the last race is finish ahead of local rider Roger Sexton to take the State Championship...no problem!

Elings Park

The hope was that the overcast weather would hold until the races were over but by the 11am start the sun was shining brightly.
The Velo was well represented in the Cat.2 classes:

In the 40-44 class, John Umale made the podium in 5th place (1:31:05) and was able to retain his State Series overall lead. Paul Hauck was 20th in 1:48:10.
In the 45-49 class, Vince Sabotin just missed the podium coming in 6th in 1:36:52. Hey, at least he remember his riding gear!
Francisco Vidal appears to have a lock (almost) on the State Series Championship with another 1st place finish in the 50-54 class (1:28:45).
In the 55-59 class, Gary Bojorquez continues his good season with a 5th place podium finish (2:00:56)
Bruce Ramsey took another step towards a State Championship with a 2nd place (1:54:29) finish in the 60-64.

With only two races left things are starting to really heat up. Come on up to Big Bear for the final races and cheer on the Santa clarita Velo Mtn Bike Team!
